Like A Local: Amman, Jordan
LIKE A LOCAL
A common question that comes to my mind, and I'm sure yours as well, when I'm traveling is "what do the locals do?" I truly believe that everything and every place is worth seeing at least once. Whether it is something touristy or something off the beaten path, that something is special and more importantly new to you! There's so much we can learn by opening ourselves up to new adventures. So, of course, one of the best ways to do this is to live, explore, and experience a place "like a local"!
1. YOUR CITY'S NAME AND NICKNAMES
2. FAVORITE PLACES TO EAT
Levant: the best Mediterranean dine-in restaurant. They have two dishes that I cannot resist in any circumstance: Freekeh Bilfukhara (for 7 JDs = $10), which is mainly smoked cracked wheat cooked with mushrooms and cheese in a pottery bowl. The second dish is their Beef Shawarma (for 17 JDs = $24/2 people). For those of you who don’t know Shawarma, it’s char grilled beef tender loin that’s served on a vertical spit with pita bread on the side for you to make your own beef wrap. Shawarma is one of our favorite foods in Amman and Jordan.
Lucca Steakhouse: the best steakhouse in Amman. My two favorite dishes are Shashlik and Lucca Special.
Brisket: for the best angus burgers in Town. My all-time favorites are BOB (Brisket on Burger) (for 12 JDs = $17) and the three mini PB chicken sliders (for 12 JDs = $17). I know when you hear Peanut Butter & chicken you’d say “WHAAT?! SERIOUSLY?!” but trust me it’s out of this world! Also they have amazing short ribs and back ribs that you have to order 24 hours before
3. FAVORITE PLACES TO STUDY/DO WORK
The Wild Jordan Centre which has a magnificent view towards downtown Amman and Amman Citadel. They have plugs in between tables for your laptop and a quiet smoke-free atmosphere. They also have a great healthy menu and home-made tea blends that I always make sure to try.
4. FAVORITE PLACES TO RELAX/DETOX
My favorite way to relax and detox recently is by doing yoga. Amman has many recreational yoga spots, indoor & outdoor and they arrange yoga workshops in & out of Amman, such as One with Nature Centre.
5. FAVORITE PHOTO SPOT
I can’t say but Jabal Amman and specifically the area that overlooks downtown and Amman Citadel from Rainbow Street and its adjacent streets. The view is spectacular day or night and every direction you look at is worth taking a picture. Sometimes I take a stroll on these streets and almost every time I find something new worth my attention and my photography.
6. ONE “TOURISTY” THING IN EVERYONE ACTUALLY HAS TO VISIT
I’d say The Roman Amphitheatre in Downtown Amman but Amman Citadel is also a MUST during day or night. They’re both close and overlooking each other.
7. ONE NOT SO WELL KNOWN SPOT PEOPLE SHOULD DEFINITELY VISIT
Definitely Iraq Al-Amir, literally translates to “Caves of the Prince”, 24 km Southwest of Amman. This place is known for its caves and Qasr Al Abd “Castle of the slave” ruins, but the REAL hidden gem isn’t popular. Before you reach all the historical touristic areas, if you drive towards the East you’ll find a spectacular nature with a wonderful stream coming from Wadi Al-Kafrain “Al Kafrain Valley”. I am in love with the view, especially during Spring and Summer. A Beautiful place to meditate, relax or go on a picnic
8. ONE UNIQUE FACT
Amman is known as the city that had been built on seven hills or “Jabals”. They’re an amazing mixture between ancient and modern. Moving from one jabal to another you’ll see history stories told by its buildings and streets. The jabals are the following:
Jabal Al Natheef
Jabal Al Hussain
Jabal Al Akhdar
Jabal Al Ashrafieh
Jabal Al Nuzha
Jabal Al Taj
9. ANY TIPS OR TRICKS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE YOUR CITY
Getting around in Amman is easy. There are eight circles / roundabouts that form the spine of the city. Although, public transportation is the worst, however; taxis are very cheap, so you don’t have to rent a car when you come to Amman. Also there are three great mobile transportations services in Amman which are: Uber, Careem & Easy Taxi which would make your life easier. One thing to keep in mind always, if you have trouble finding your way, do not hesitate to ask a passer-by for help. Jordanians are very friendly, and most people will be delighted to help.
10. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CITY
It has to be the FOOD! Food & the people. Amman is exposed to various cuisines, but my favorite is the Mediterranean cuisine! It’s hard not to like it & fall in love with it! It’s so flavorful, healthy & light! Yet the greatest charm of Amman lies within its people: their friendliness and hospitability. They have a special genuine warmth that would encourage you to making friends in no time!
